A Scottish charity that aims to enable single parent families to achieve their potential, to reach a decent standard of living and contribute to Scottish society.
About the project
One Parent Families Scotland aims to enable single parent families to achieve their potential, to reach a decent standard of living and contribute to Scottish society.
Established in 1944, One Parent Families Scotland (OPFS) is the leading charity working with single parent families in Scotland. They provide expert advice, practical support and campaign with parents to make their voices heard to change the systems, policies and attitudes that disadvantage single parent families.
Their vision is of a Scotland in which single parents and their children are valued and treated equally and fairly.
Their mission is to work with and for single parent families, providing support services that enable them to achieve their potential and help create lasting solutions to the poverty and barriers facing many single parents and their children.
The process
One Parent Families has been on the go since 1944, since then the charity and in more recent years their website have undergone several changes. The Gate Edinburgh was asked back in roughly 2019/20 to take their old outdated site and give it a new/modern look and feel.
The re design was undertaken via a combination of Sketch and Invision, once the designer had approval of the new design it was handed to me in order to build out the WordPress themes and make the site come to life.
The site utlises a very even split of Advanced Custom Fields, the default in built Wordpress WYSIWYG editor and the back then relatively new WordPress block editor (Guttenberg). The site also boasts a very well used forum, a third party online chat integration and a fully custom debt calculator which can be used by anyone and is actively used by the internal team at OPFS when chatting to and dealing with their clients.
OPFS also has a sister site that was built out at the same time as the new OPFS site the My Life and Me site is a much smaller site than its OPFS counter part, but also boasts some uniqu functionality such as allowing users to save pages in a list for review later and allowing end users to pring or save these pages out as very simple pages for easier consumption or printing.
