The centre of excellence for digital capabilities and they manage the Scottish Governments Digital, Data and Technology (DDaT) profession.
About the project
Scotland's future will be forged in a digital world. A world in which digital skills and technologies will transform our lives. The Scottish Digital Academy are the centre of excellence for digital capability and they support the Digital, Data and Technology (DDaT) profession within the Scottish Government.
The team provides high quality professional learning to public and third sector staff to build digital skills and talent. Their aim is to support the transformation of services by being focused on user centred design, maximising the use of digital technologies and using new ways of working.
The process
The original Digital Academy was offered purely via a service called Arlo, this is a platform that allows for the creation of in-person, e-learning, digital and blended learning models. The digital academy approached the Gate as they wanted a place to showcase their learning modules whilst also allowing their users to find out more about the academy and what they do.
The site was designed using a combination of Sketch and Invision, upon client approval the design files where passed over to me so I could begin the site build in WordPress, site is built primamrily using the Advanced Custom Fields plugin to create the various custom content blocks and modules that allow the site editors and authors to cretae completely flexible web pages.
The site was designed and built using the Scottish Government Design System, these coponents where largely untouched on this site, so integration was easy and painless. The academy also required us to import the various courses from the Arlo system, so that all content was displayed on the main site, all course content and registration forms are created and live within the Arlo system, but the Gate wrote custom code that leveriged the Arlo API allowing for the import of all course content into custom posts within the WordPress system, this import can be run manually but is set to auto pull new content as well as updated content from the Arlo system. The registraion forms remained within the Arlo system and as such custom headers and footers for these had to be created within Arlo to mimic the look and feel of the main WordPress site.
